The Black Panther movie is set to come out next year and the trailer that came out 3 months ago has already gained more than 30 million views. There has been a lot of hype about it and many have emphasized the fact that the cast is (of course) mainly composed by Black actors, which is truly remarkable considering how the movie industry treats 'representation'. Unfortunately, there has been a lot of controversy especially with the poster, because many have compared it to Huey P.Newton's signature picture sitting on a 'throne'. Also, many feel uncomfortable with the idea of a Black movie gaining so much attention by the media and being so hugely anticipated. The comments make me think of the fact that in this society, poc will be 'allowed' to be properly represented at a certain extent. If they ask for too much, it will cause discomfort!!! (notice the irony)

Thanks for sharing, Rina! I think that given historical systems of oppression, it's definitely difficult for POC to get the representation they need (and even then, one that sends a strong statement). How do you think we can combat this?
