As it often happens with different elements of Black culture, the durag has also been criminalized. I wouldn't precisely know when this process has started, but I would certainly say that the media suggests a different kmagr of Black men who wear durags. They are seen suspiciously and associated with gangs or other criminal activities. This is pretty ironic considering the fact that the durag has originated during the era of slavery and was created for practical uses such as protection from the sun during the cotton picking.
I wonder if the durag would be represented the same way if white people wore it instead.
