Hey BTD, above is an article published today from the New York Times wherein David Brooks details a speech made by George Packer about the current face of America.
Based on our individual experiences, which of the narratives mentioned in the article do you believe best applies to the US/your country? Which do you believe we should strive for, and what are the flaws of some of the narratives?
Thank you for sharing this article with us! I view the narratives of multicultural America and "America First" as largely dissonant from each other, and it's interesting to see how polarized they are. In my own community, I see a balance between these two narratives. There are students who are excited to make an impact in the world, to transcend their socioeconomic barriers and pursue careers in engineering and medicine. There are students who believe in the values of personal responsibility and individual liberties, values that they believe are being damaged and corrupted. There are students who fit into both of those 'categories'. I come from a small suburb, yet even there, there is such a diversity of viewpoints. I'm not sure there could ever be a single American narrative.
