U.S. Banks Hurt Cannabis Sales in Uruguay

Since becoming the first nation to fully legalize recreational marijuana sales, Uruguay is facing major pushback from the U.S. financial sector. American banks, including Bank of America, have sent letters to officials threatening to cease business with banks in Uruguay that "provide services for those state-controlled sales," reported the New York Times. Uruguayan banks then warned pot-selling pharmacies that their accounts could be closed in order to stay in good standing with American banks. The conflict goes back to the USA PATRIOT Act, since it penalizes financial institutions for working with businesses that promote controlled substances like marijuana. What are your thoughts on this?
