It may sound very liberal, but I am not able to understand the basic human mindset which have stigmatize gender up-to this extent. Everyone must have a right toward his/her/other's sexuality and sexual orientation.
It's actually like a basic human psyche which doesn't like diversity and wants to see all the same even when it knows that there is no life and no survival without diversity. Referring to the 'On the origin of species', which says that basic human instinct is of survival and reproducing or sex. So, how come, anyone should dictate on the basic human nature. Certainly the religious texts are to be blamed which have created such stigmas and doctrines which got settled so deep in the public's mind that it took so many years to actually recognize it and the reforms are still in the process. Condemning homosexuality by the very Bible or the sex stigmas created by the hippocratic rituals in Hindu, Muslim or any other other religion has affected the very simple and ever present human emotion. We know what happened to Alan Turing. It took 100 years for a 'developed' state and its 'honorary' monarchy to have a royal pardon for the treatment of that great mathematician.
Germany voting for adoption of law in favor of same sex marriages, even going against its Chancellor is a big boost to the gender reforms. And we have seen that many like this have happened in the recent past, started by the 'socially' well developed Scandinavian countries. Hope this will go on in the future like this.
Gender discrimination is a matter of tradition, in my opinion, not of psyche. The double standard between genders is rooted in the agricultural revolution, when men and women began to take up different roles and responsibilities. Years of hammering this standard into our societies and cultures had made us used to the idea.
I do agree on this regarding gender discrimination and double standard between genders. But my take is on sexuality and stigmas around sexual orientation (LGBT). They affect both the gender equally, without any bias. In my opinion, they are a matter of psyche, as there are evidences of traditions cherishing this but still it is in there
