    Is Palestinian terrorism justified?

You know, when I was in school last month, we had a discussion as to whether palestinian "freedom fighters" stabbing israelis on the street or opening fire in public is justified given their cause. Personally, I believe that hurting or killing innocent people undermines whatever cause that is being fought for, but an astonishing number of my classmates thought that Palestinian terrorism is alright since Palestinians need to have attention brought to their plight. What are y'all's opinions on this issue?

I understand the undermining thing, and if someone came to me saying they wanted to do that, I'd say no. It's a bad idea. But in a really twisted way, I can see why.

Imagine being born in a hell hole, a place where you and everyone you know is discriminated against and lives under the fear of violence from Israeli bombings, and where even your religious freedom is dubious. Imagine growing up in fear, learning to hate those you see as your oppressors. Imagine being told that the Israeli people are the one and only cause of this terrible life you live (and to some extent, they sorta are, it's more the government's fault, and not theirs alone, but that government is elected and it certainly isn't helping). Growing up like that doesn't make people prone to see reason or have a nice chat over some tea. It makes you grow up hard and mean and makes you want revenge.

I don't support terrorism in any way, but people who can't understand why violence is used in revolution don't make sense to me. These people are hurting, they are scorned by the world, and like a caged animal they strike out against their perceived abusers. They don't know better, and let's not pretend like if people were associated with the government that killed your brother, mother, or friend, you wouldn't wanna hurt people as well. Revolution is largely violent, there are of course non-violent social elements to it that must happen, but as Malcolm X once said "The only kind of revolution that's nonviolent is the Negro revolution. The only revolution based on loving your enemy is the Negro revolution. ... Revolution is bloody, revolution is hostile, revolution knows no compromise, revolution overturns and destroys everything that gets in its way". He wasn't entirely wrong, looking to the Civil war, Haitian revolutionary war, or even the world wars.

I can see why people act the way they do. If you are effectively able to get into someone's head, I believe you can understand why even the most vile and lowly people on the planet feel they must act the way they do. I don't support it, but I understand it. I don't think it helps their cause if they want a peaceful two state solution or something along those lines. But if their cause isn't a peaceful resolution, but if they want their homeland back, and all of it? I can't say that for that cause, their tactics are particularly poorly thought out. I guess it's a matter of perspective.

Note, again, don't kill people. It's bad. Especially innocent people.

Yes, however, real change for African Americans came only after relatively peaceful movements with leaders like Martin Luther King Jr.. Violence, especially against a majority, will engender more hate towards those who commit it.
