Do college athletics do more harm than good?

College athletics, especially at larger universities, are one of the primary contributors towards school spirit, school prestige, and scholarship money, etc. However, this article disagrees on a principled level: https://www.counterpunch.org/2014/04/22/why-higher-education-should-rid-itself-of-college-athletics/

What do you think about the article? Are college athletics good for schools? Good for the mission/purpose of schools? If not, should we get rid of athletic programs, either at a varsity level or altogether? Why/why not?
